Baby's First Year Kidspot

Welcome to week 13!

This Week Your Baby Is:

Turning his head to find you

By Week Thirteen, your baby will begin to bring a couple of his developmental milestones together into one wonderful package - when you enter a room, he'll turn his head to find you. At this age he will recognise your voice (and the voice of dad) and begin to display great excitement - kicking his feet, laughing, smiling, and jerky body movements - at your approach.

You and your partner are the best people in the world according to your baby - after all, you do feed, clothe, cuddle and care for him - and at this age he will do all he can to get your attention.

3 - 6 months physical development

Hot Topic:

Sleep, SIDS and rolling over

While all babies under the age of one are, in theory, at risk of SIDS, the majority of deaths due to SIDS occurs between two and four months of age. While we all now know how to reduce the risk factors associated with SIDS, many parents begin to worry about their baby's safety once she can roll over as it's now no longer possible to sleep baby on her back.

It's definitely true that sleeping on her back will significantly reduce the risk of SIDS, but most health professionals agree that once your baby can roll from her back to her front, her risk of SIDS is reduced as she can now 'rescue' herself from lying on her stomach; it's babies who can't move independently that are at risk. It's still recommended that you put your baby to sleep on her back as this is the optimal position for safe sleep as well as being the position she's used to falling asleep in.

Kidspot Tip:

Baby Massage

Baby massage is a great way to spend some quiet time with your baby. After all, doesn't everyone love to be massaged? And if you incorporate a little massage into your end-of-the-day routine - bath, massage, pyjamas, feed, bed - you may find that he's so utterly relaxed when you slip him between the covers that he falls to sleep in an instant.

Baby massage can also help your baby's digestive system - if your baby is windy or suffers from colic or reflux, you can learn special massage techniques that focus on relieving this discomfort.
