Hot Topic: Delayed development This is a beautiful age - suddenly it seems that everything - eating, sleeping, talking, walking - is coming together for your baby so that you can catch the occasional tantalising glimpse of the toddler she's going to be. Or the opposite can be true. Those little voices of concern about your baby's development that have been lurking for some time suddenly turn up the volume. By witnessing the development of your baby's peers, you may become concerned about the apparent delay in your own child's development. If you are worried, you should discuss the areas of concern with your Baby Health Nurse, who will either put your mind at ease (there is, after all, a wide range of 'normal' development) or refer you to a relevant specialist. The earlier those potential problems are detected the better, so don't delay in getting advice and reassurance. Find out more about your baby's developmental milestones
Kidspot Tip: Refusing help Did you know that your eleven-month old can do everything HIMSELF? He doesn't need your help ever, and if he can't do it on his own then it's YOUR fault! Sounds familiar? This baby/toddler age can be a strange time when your baby (who really is a baby no matter how grown-up he thinks he is!) is looking for more independence while needing constant reassurance from you. Big and little at the same time, he wants the satisfaction of conquering tasks on his own, but needs the cuddles from you when things don't go as planned. So if he vents his frustration in your direction, try to keep in mind that his striving for (and achieving) independence is your ultimate parenting goal, and that you'll have many, many years of this pushing and pulling ahead of you before he leaves the nest - so get used to it! |
